Why do I mention Neuro-diversity in my professional portfolio?

I’m 1 in 26.

One in every 26 Americans has epilepsy, and I happen to be one of them.

It’s a part of who I am and how I live my life, so I chose to share my story and raise awareness of the condition…even in my portfolio.

neurodivergent

adjective:

differing in mental or neurological function from what is considered typical or normal; not neurotypical.

At the heart of my life experience is diversity of thought, empathy, and awareness.

From these experiences, I have been able to cultivate a deeper understanding and empathy for the world around me. Absorbing the lived experiences of others as I share my own with them.

Above all else, I live and breathe inclusion. Simply because throughout much of my life I’ve not always been afforded it.

Seizing the day; and nailing the interview

A while back, I had a small seizure during a job interview. It was so small most people wouldn’t even notice. I look back now and can laugh, but at the time it was embarrassing. Yet, I charged on and survived the interview.

Despite the minor brain glitch, I got the job offer!

I quickly realized, however, that I had to make a choice: continue to hide it as best I could, or be completely upfront about it.

So, I chose to seize the day.
